As the environmental cost and human costs of things like coal and oil are fully applied to the equation they are already becoming less viable. And burning fossil fuels as an industry is already vary developed and efficient. As producing/consuming engery in other ways becomes more efficient they will just become more attractive.
Like I said this is not some switch you flip, you don't just tell people to do it because its the right thing to do. You invest the time and energy to make alternative options the most viable. I also think diversified power generation is in our future.
If we knew how a wide scale more sustainable grid would look we wouldn't need the R&D.

This isn't really the place for this discussion, but how do you juxtapose our reliance on oil for its chemical uses? In other words, sure we can run cars and houses on solar power, or compressed gas, but look around you. Almost everything you see and probably whatever you're looking at this on is made of petroleum products or by-products. Even a lot of what we eat these days has to be factored in. In theory this "stop using oil" message sounds amazing, but like a wise man once said on TV "Communism works...in theory!"

I don't what shape it is, but considering the voter tendencies there over the decades its amazingly not a salamander!
