They both have tarnished reputations today (undeservedly, in the case of Wagner - he couldn't help it that Hitler was obsessed with his music). Furthermore, most people are smart enough to judge people by the standards of their time. By the standards of 2015, beating up your wives and girlfriends is terrible behaviour. The only reason Meriweather isn't universally regarded as scum is because he's a famous athlete.
