As a former crappy amateur boxer I got tagged a lot, never completely knocked out but I definitely had a temporary loss of brain function a few times. As far as I know I never had a concussion symptom afterwards though.

Yeah I got nearly knocked out in hockey and didn't get a concussion. A hit from behind that sent me flying into the boards, thought I went unconscious and the doctors said no concussion. Hope like heck Ferland was just shaken up, what I found is usually the worst hits are the completely unexpected ones which is exactly what happened to Ferland. When the brain is not ready for trauma it's a lot easier to get shaken up.
