Giving him PP time and getting his offensive numbers up to where they need to be in order to justify what he would cost would require taking that time - specifically PP time - away from other guys that are already effective in that role. So you're spending $5m+ in order to replace one offensive guy with another.
The Flames had more points from the D this year than any other team. It's the law of diminishing returns. If he was $2.5 - $3M, then sure - put on the 3rd pair and take what you get.
But spending $5m+ on the one thing we are already tops in the league at, is really short-sighted IMO.
Spend the money where we need the most help.

A little bit of smoke and mirrors as nearly every single defenseman had career years. Very unlikely the Flames are close to tops in this area next year. We are sure to see a decline next year from half or even all of them which will hurt the Flames seeing it was a catalyst for them. Getting Green would at least help them maintain what they had going this season.
