I doubt the proximity to a hydrant will matter. In fact, I'd think that would be preferred because it kills two birds with one stone. People can't park in front of a hydrant anyway, and people stopping to grab their mail will only be stopped there for a minute at most.
My sister has lived across the street from a mailbox for 25+ years and there's a hydrant only a short distance away from it.
