Don't know if he can't or just doesn't put forth the effort. I do think that he hasn't yet learned to think and react quickly enough, so the play is done by the time he figures it out. His few good plays this year have come when he has had plenty of time to figure things out.
I just haven't seen this tremendous skill he's supposed to have. His skating - see above. His shot - meh. His stickhandling? He never has the puck long enough. Passing? He made a nice long pass this year, other than that, nothing special. Lots of guys can make that pass with time and space.
