Apologies if this is too early, but I can't help think that Ricciardi is squirming about what he needs to do before the start of next season.
Its can't be another merry shopping spree and there are serious holes to fill.
Badly Needed:
- a second catcher (ideally young, decent and emerging) to play with Zaun. (seems obvious Molina will not be back)
- A stronger solution for shortstop
- An additional decent starting pitcher.
- one or two reliable middle relievers.
The only hope I can see from within the system is that it was an off-season for the pitchers and a few of the younger guys can step it up
I couldn't find a contract status summary on-line and I am not sure if Lilly, Hinske, etc. are still still under contract next year.
Everything in the outfield worked out amazingly this year (even Hinske) but it seems risky to trade anyone away.... having said that, what else do they have to trade for quality return. Vernon ? either before the season or closer to next-years trade deadline.
Good thing Hillenbrand mouthed off and forced a trade for the future before the wheels fell off.
