Heart-wrenching. Great to see a "tough guy" breaking up like that and showing the human toll of life after athleticism. They may make a pile of dough, but the human issues never go away.
The NHL and the NHLPA should collectively be ashamed of themselves; they have made millions upon millions off these guys and do indeed owe them something when their career is done. Not much different when people retire after a long time working - no sense of direction, but they are generally much older than elite athletes. (And poorer.)
