Yup. Three things, IMO:

1) they were behind, so much of the play was going to be in Calgary's end

2) they were unable to get to dangerous areas or get passes through to the middle, because the Flames were collapsing to the middle and keeping them to the outside. And shots from the perimeter are not very dangerous, but they also...

3) result in the shooting team retaining the puck off rebounds because they are to the outside. If the attacking team are all around the perimeter, they will continue to recover rebounds because rebounds and tipped passes tend to end up back at the boards.

Lots of possession time, lots of weak perimeter shots, much frustration.
