Seriously, it is kind of because of that. The longer irons have less sole and a different swing weight, so players tend to swing a little harder with them. They are much more difficult to hit for most players. That is why the hybrid are so popular. More sole, a little more weight, and a more consistent swing weight to your other irons. I'd recommend trying out a hybrid (Hogans are really nice). That should help you out.
