We have to look at the positives:
1. Lowe and MacT are still running the show
2. Tavares, Stamkos, Ovechkin, Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, and Yakupov have a combined 0 Stanley Cups, because this isn't basketball, one player does not suddenly make a team a contender.
3. They're drafting someone who won't admit it, but he doesn't want to play there.
4. We should be thrilled that the Flames were not a part of the lottery. Any Oiler fan who mocks us for making the playoffs and missing out on McDavid is an absolute idiot.
5. They're going to have to pay McDavid over 10 million dollars/year to stay in Edmonton, meaning that they'll have to trade one of their big names already, and they won't have enough money to sign Nurse or Klefbom since they're already against the cap. Not to mention Draisaitl and Yakupov will need new deals soon too. That team is still a mess and far from out of it.
6. They missed out on the generational defenseman in Hanifin that they needed. Their defense is still putrid and isn't too promising.
7. Even if the Oilers manage to become somewhat relevant again, at least we'll see a good battle of Alberta.
8. Calgary still looks to be the better team. We have the intangibles that Edmonton lacks and a good culture.
McDavid is a huge win for the Oilers, but they're the Oilers, a huge win does not make them good. It makes them better, but they're still far from a good hockey team.
