It makes a nice story. Lemieux saved the Penquins, who were facing relocation. Then, just as he was about to retire, while the franchise was again facing potential relocation, they got another "generational talent" in Crosby, who got to billet with Mario. The Pens win a Cup. Pittsburgh got a new arena and became one of the select franchises, besides the big US markets to be featured regularly on NBC.
McDavid "replaces" Gretzky. Those other #1 overall picks have failed to pan out, and Taylor Hall especially was supposed to have been pretty damn f'ing good before being drafted.
Well, it's possible that the system is legitimate. Then again, no other draft positions changed, except at the top...
