Cyclocross bikes are really performance bikes: they're versatile, but they're designed to go fast over slightly rough terrain (no drops).
Hybrids are designed for versatility and comfort, and so are great if you're not a speed demon and like dicking around with curbs and stuff.
Both can be good options but it depends on your preferences and the terrain you'll be covering.
I will say that, if you're considering an aluminum cross bike, consider getting a carbon stem and/or stem to add comfort. And if you're considering a front suspension hybrid, look for a rock shox or fox fork rather than a suntour. Also, don't worry too much about bar shape, you'll adapt to either, but you may have a strong preference really shifter style that guides you one way or another.
Whatever you do, ride before buying and get the bike that makes you feel happiest.
