A "vintage" one probably has the Stanley Cup badge on it, and I always find it strange when modern-day players are sewn onto a jersey from an era that they never played in. I have a vintage and got MacInnis put on it because the player and jersey style are from the same era.
On the flip side, putting a #9 McDonald on current jersey just looks weird. I have seen this era-blending at the dome before.
Obviously, you can put whoever you want on it regardless of what some random guy on an internet forum says.
