Default Bumps ticks and scratches

Long ago, I believe in the 60's or 70's, there used to be a device you could use to get rid of the various spurious noises on old records that had a fair amount of damage i.e. bumps, ticks and scratches. The talk at the time was that the record companies felt that it was affecting record sales and went around and bought them all up. I, personally never owned such a device and when I tried to find one, they were all gone.

I understand that records are coming back in vogue these days, and being able to use such a device would be quite useful. Most of my old LP's have a fair amount of damage from old parties, kids etc.

Does anyone out there have any knowledge on this subject?
