Many likely know where I sit, but I don't think you can ignore the whether he'd sign point. I truly believe the Flames would not have traded Sven had he not said he won't sign.
I don't think his value on the trade market at any point, or what they'd thought it would be in the situation you described was going to be enough for them to move him. I think they would have rather worked with him on trying to overcome the mental issues because they believe he has the tools, but only traded him because they now knew they'd lose him for nothing in the offseason.
