The photo around the Twitterverse tipped off the world Jordan Sigalet was that close to playing another NHL game.
With Karri Ramo injured in the opening minute of Saturday’s clash with the Edmonton Oilers and a university goalie on his way to serve as emergency backup, Sigalet was dressed for nearly half of the game, just in case.
A photo of a stone-faced Sigalet, sitting on a chair in full gear, was put out for all to see.
“I was getting my game face on. And I haven’t put on the gear in a while. I’m out of shape,” the Flames goalie coach said with a laugh. “It was brand new pants, kinda stiff, and I could hard even bend over.”
Ever since the Florida Panthers had both of their netminders injured in the same game in early March, the Flames have an emergency goalie at the Saddledome for every home game, and Sigalet has travelled with his gear in case they faced such a situation on the road.
Sigalet, 34, retired in 2009 and has one NHL game to his name — a 43-second outing in the 2005-06 season for the Boston Bruins.
So close to NHL appearance No. 2.
“It’s exciting. I was hoping to get on the bench, get some camera time, but that never happened,” Sigalet said. “You don’t want it to happen, but we’ve been prepared for it by having the gear. You don’t expect a guy to go down that early, but as soon as he went down, I went down, got dressed. Once we tracked down the other kid and he came in, it was his job. He’s been on the ice more than I have.
“I was joking that I have the NHL record of 43 seconds — it’s the shortest NHL career by a goalie — so I said if I go in, I’m only going in for 42 seconds and not beating my record.”
