Because if they had sent him to the AHL, he wouldn't have been available for the flames unless in emergency situations. This way they have more options, especially if a player starts really struggling but doesn't constitute an emergency call up. Doesn't mean they automatically hand him a spot in the lineup in the most important games the flames have played in years. Of course, he may prove that he's a better option in practice, but he certainly wasn't guaranteed a spot in the lineup as soon as he was called.
