People are amazing at deluding themselves. They'll believe what they need to believe to feel better about their situation.

They'll commute the one time at 3 am in the summer and take that as their reference "average commute time" for the rest of their lives. Laws of physics aside, they'll never average up for rain, snow, normal traffic or traffic accidents, etc. that inevitably happen. You can pretty much take what people say about their commute and at least add 50% to it or even double it to be realistic.

Oh, and don't forget: "You're richer than you think."
