At one time in the NHL you could not pass the puck across two lines, IE:
You could not pass the puck from your own zone, across your blue line, to a player on the opposition blue line, across the red line. That was blown up as a two line pass.
The red line was "taken out" to allow for two line passes.
IMO, it was a good thing, it stretched the neutral zone out.
