When the new Spark was built, I recall there was some uproar over the fate of the Planetarium, and there was a group trying to get it declared an historic building. I believe they were successful, but I could be wrong on that.
The rationale is that it was built as Calgary's Centennial Project in 1967. To celebrate Canada's centennial, the Federal government gave money to every community in Canada to build some sort of commemorative infrastructure. This is why many small towns across Canada have arenas with names like The Centennial Civic Centre or Centennial Arena. Calgary used its money to build the Planetarium. Before it was renamed the Science Centre in the 80s or 90s, it was known as the Centennial Planetarium.
