When I first heard it I was impressed with the sound right away. It's no Master of Puppets but every Metallica album sounds different and they dont like repeating themselves. I thought the lyrics could have used some work but the album hasnt even been recorded yet so there's a chance they could change a bit. And since then I dont think the lyrics are that bad.
They say the album wont be out until Fall 2007 but I could see them saying that so that they dont have pressure on them to get it done by the end of 06 or the start of 07. They already have like 15 songs written so it shouldnt take them a year to tweak and record them.
