Nope, you're right, I didn't see any Daily Show until the early 2000's. If that's true, though, I'm not sure how it changes what I said. The Daily Show wasn't the phenomenon it is now back around 2000. It's in the spotlight. You don't get as much of a chance to find your sea legs in those circumstances.
But on the other hand, he doesn't have to BE Jon Stewart. It's possible that he can be something completely different and it'll work.
