At my old, old job this was the case. It was in retail and it could get really rediculous come the week end when suddenly 3 or 5 employees would call in sick or have some other reason (car won't start) for not comming to work. Basically part time staff all were required to bring in a Dr's exemption note "If your sick you should be seing the Dr" was the owners phillosiphy. I think Dr's also can charge ($25?) to write a sick note because to store owners would re emburse the fee to the employee.
