What he did was wrong, he has to be punished for it. But he went to the guy and apologized and he apologized to his employer. He deserves discipline for his actions. I think these measures were extreme.

At the end of the day the BBC is doing their health and safety corporate BS.

He knew what he did was wrong. He apologized, the producer accepted his apology and by all accounts didnt want this to happen. Hey if Top Gear goes down that producer probably loses his job too.
There's no place in the western world where a company can keep on a senior employee who punches out an underling, there's no other suitable response for it, the police are considering assault charges. It is in no way minor.
