For a team that went into a rebuild during that season this is not a surprise at all. There have been 3 trade deadlines and 2 offseasons.
The fact the team is doing this well when moving a good chunk of the players for picks and prospects is surprising.
Iginla, Bouwmeester, Stempniak, Glencross, Comeau, Baertschi were moved for picks and prospects that have no impact on the current Flames team.
Kipper retired, Cammy, Butler,, Cervenka and several others walked as UFA's.
Tangs was traded for Jones but that is the only deal I can think of from that roster where a player is still on the team.
The core that remains from that team however represent 3 of our top 4 D, our highest scoring forward, 2nd line center, 4th line centre, and some good depth forwards. Ramo was also part of the organization just not in the NHL yet.
Having a couple prospects develop rapidly has helped huge but a good chunk of the core of this current team was still in place 2 years ago
