Took a stab at breaking down Chicago:
2005/06 roster (finished with 65 points): http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/l...000352006.html
Calder, Bell, Arnason, Bourque, Vrbata, Seabrook, Lapointe, Barnaby, Spacek, Vandermeer, Sharp, Vorobiev, Keith, Holmqvist, Cullen, Brown, Dowd, Ellison, Hilbert, Wisniewski, Bartovic, Cullimore, Aucoin, Byfuglien, Ruutu, Khabibulin, Anderson
2007/08 roster (finished with 88 points): http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/l...000352008.html
Kane, Sharp, Toews, Lang, Byfuglien, Williams, Keith, Seabrook, Havlat, Wisniewski, Bourque, Ruutu, Sopel, Barker, Bolland, Perrault, Ladd, Vandermeer, Burish, Lapointe, Adams, Skille, Zyuzin, Kontiola, Versteeg, Hendry, Khabibulin, Lalime
One year later (2008/09), the Blackhawks finished with 104 points and went to the Conference Finals. Safe to assume that the "rebuild" was essentially complete by then -- of course they went on to win the Cup in 2009/10 after finishing with 112 points.
2008/09: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/l...000352009.html
Havlat, Kane, Toews, Versteeg, Campbell, Ladd, Bolland, Sharp, Keith, Barker, Byfuglien, Brouwer, Seabrook, Fraser, Eager, Walker, Wisniewski, Burish, Johnson, Adams, Pahlsson, Hjalmarsson, Sopel, Khabibulin, Huet, Niemi
So in the two years from 2005/06 to 2007/08, only 8 roster players remained on the team, with Byfuglien, Keith, Seabrook, and Khabbibulin being the only key pieces.
Similarly, by 2007/08, the Hawks had most of their key pieces in place that would compete for a Cup a year later (and win it the following year), including Kane, Toews, Sharp, Versteeg, Ladd, Bolland, Barker, Burish, Adams.
I know there has already been a thread comparing the Flames and the Hawks; I guess the takeaway is that you can almost turn around an entire roster (with maybe the exception of already having your top 2 D pairing) by adding skilled forwards and filling out the role players.
