Because he's declining in production, and forwards aren't an area of weakness for the Avalanche. Gaping holes on defense is their issue.

Signing Iginla doesn't fill the hole left by statsny. Spending 5 million on a defender would've been a much better use of capspace and would likely have had a more significant impact on the success of this season. Obviously it's not as simple as just signing someone, but, their issue last season was defense and it's their issue again this season. Iginla doesn't help that at all. 40 year old Iginla probably
really doesn't help that.
The Avs under Roy remind me a bit of the Stars with Brett Hull as part of their management group.
