That doesn't mean anything. Gaudreau was a fourth round pick and he received a maximum contract with maximum Schedule A bonuses and even some Schedule B bonuses (Monahan didn't get any Schedule B bonuses on his contract, so Johnny's contract is slightly bigger than Monahan's -- although Schedule B bonuses are difficult to achieve).
If the BJs wanted him to sign with them badly enough, they would offer him a maximum contract too.
The one thing they can hope for now is for Minnesota's season to end early and they can convince him to sign now and get his signing bonus early and burn off a year of his ELC to get one year closer to free agency.
