Why? Well, so many elite defencemen are found outside the 1st round. I can go and list all the superstars that fit this argument, but one just needs to look at the top 4 on the Flames - the highest scoring top 4 in the league.

3rd round pick (traded to the Flames for a 5th) - 8th round pick (went unsigned)
That is the Flames top 4 defencemen right there.
Given everyone's age, and including Wotherspoon who looks to be on the cusp of breaking into the NHL, the Flames can afford to be a bit more patient, and don't really need that blue-chip, high pedigree defencemen. Of course he would definitely be nice to have, but I just argue that it is not an immediate need for the organization.

Quoted for emphasis. You don't find too many quality forwards in the later rounds, so even though most of us want that blue chip defenseman, I think we'll be able to find one of them in the 2nd round.
