It had something to do with the waiver draft in the fall. They could reacquire a guy they traded prior to the waiver draft for some reason. The rule was designed to keep teams from somehow circumventing the waiver draft.
The Flames obviously didn't do that there though and can't believe McAmmond had to sit out the remainder of the season.

The way I remember it the rule was too stop strong teams from hiding players with weak teams, thus avoiding waivers and getting the player back when he was needed. In our circumstance it was just the opposite case but the rule still applied. Chalk up another ignorant move by Button.
