The bottom line is that the Oilers are not (and have not) been competitive with us for years.
There is no rivalry to speak of on the ice in the last few years because we've dominated the Oilers with consistency.
Maybe if and when that team ever climbs out of the basement, there might be a rivalry again some day.
But by the definition of the word, there is no rivalry right now and there hasn't been for years.

You definition of the explanation is a narrow one and only fills the role in which you attribute to it. Don't worry, no harm as a few people have tried to take that stance but the bottom line the Oilers are a rival whether you acknowledge or not
