Ferland was pushing a 100pt pace at a comparable stage in his career.
Ferland has always projected to have a much higher ceiling, and has a much more versatile tool kit that Smith. Ferland doesn't need to stand in the crease to score.
Doesn't mean Smith won't make the NHL, or that Ferland will, but Ferland is a lot more likely to be better than a replacement-level player.
