Maybe it was a couple of CBAs ago. But I think that was why Dean Mcammond was ineligible to play for the Flames after they re acquired him years back.
That rule was there to close a loophole concerning waivers. If you traded a player away before the waiver draft, he was ineligible to play for your team again that season. Basically, you couldn't pay some other team to hide your player on their protected list and then get the player back again.

I believe this rule disappeared when they did away with the waiver draft.
