I don't doubt he was seeing what was available, but not breaking the roster apart to sell off assets helps this season and not giving up picks or prospects for over-priced rentals is the best move big picture.

As long as it doesn't involve any one in our core players (which it wouldn't) to pick up a top 9 player with upside from somewhere, then it's not hurting us.
You build up extra assets so that you can make such moves - to add - without it hurting you and fact is we have plenty of depth. We have NHL or near NHL ready players, too many that not all are going to make this roster. There will barely be room for Bennett next season. If you can flip say Stajan and a Reinhart, Granlund etc for a guy that can help you now and a few years, why not?
Edit: AND look at that! Flames trade Sven Baertschi. Using their assets.
