No, I don't think you do get it.
Clarkson is overpaid, but Horton is much more overpaid because he doesn't even play.
Columbus is not a cap team so they don't benefit from LTIR -
they are paying 23 players + Horton. (on a budget)
Now however, for the price of Horton, they get Clarkson + another minimum contract. In other words, 21 players + Clarkson + minimum contract.
Clarkson doesn't need to be worth $5.25M, he only needs to be better than their 23rd roster player. If so, he is an upgrade from Horton.
I don't get why people are having trouble with this - it's a great trade for Columbus.
It is also a great trade for Toronto - caveat being, Nonis created this mess and now they are cutting a $27M cheque to fix his mess.
