I'm an expat. I live and work in Baku, Azerbaijan. I was born in Canada, own a home in Canada and pay taxes in Canada. Should I be 'no longer' have the Canadian government of their embassy staff at my service, or would it be different for me because I'm Caucasian and born in Canada?

A Canadian citizen is a Canadian citizen - FULL STOP. It shouldn't matter where they came from or where they live at any moment in time. To suggest otherwise, especially when you suggest Canadians living in Lebanon are less than real "Canadians", smacks of racism.

I am shocked at the intolerance I read in so many of the posts here. Too many people seem to willingly accept the idea of 2 status of Canadians. Those born in Canada and those who immigrated - especially from an Arab or Asian country. I'm ashamed of Canadian's who hold those believes. They represent everything that Canada IS NOT about.

Back to the topic on hand - the evacuation. It has been badly handled, and if a Liberal government had been in power, those defending the government now, would be all over this saying it was just another example of Liberal incompetence. How many people have been evacuated? 500 - 1500 five or six days after the bombs starting falling. That's pathetic.

The ironic thing is that the evacuation hasn't been botched by the Harper government, it has been botched by the bureaucrats - the same bureaucrats that are in place regardless of the government of the day. The Canadian embassies overseas are notorious for the poor service they provide their citizens. I guess like so many here, they think that Canadians should be grateful for whatever pitiful level of service they provide. I think that's wrong. Canadians should expect and demand service and support from their foreign representatives everywhere in the world.
There are many people that come to this country and other countries aswell to just obtain citizenship. As soon as they get it they bugger off and don't come back until they need free Healthcare and old age pension. That the same for people who were born here and live for their entire life abround and them come back to reap the benifits. No matter if you are born in Canada or immigrate here, there should be a residency obligation that one has to meet inorder to retain ones citizenship. What that should be? I don't know. But it is already in place for permanent residents both in Canada and the USA. A permanent resident has to live in Canada 2 years out of every five. That is very reasonable. Once your a citizen, maybe it should be 3 years out of every ten. Also there are some exemptions to that. If the PR is working for a Canadian company abroad, they are considered living in Canada. From what I understand there is also Humanitatian and Compasionate grounds to maintain ones status, such as having to go abroad to look after an ill family member or something like that.

Now my biggest beaf is when one contributes jack **** to the social system and then comes back to milk it for all its worth. If you are still paying taxes then by all means IMO you have every right to access the services of Canada.

No one has ever said on this post that where one is born abroad makes a difference in what services you can obtain from the Canadain government, so I am not sure where you are getting that from.

As for this comment:

Can you show me anywhere in this post where someone says that there are two statuses: 1 for born Canadians and 1 for those born abroad especially the comment about being born in ASIA or ARAB??????? Thats right, you can't, so where are you pulling this crap out of.

As for this little rant:

What the hell do you expect?????????? Should the Canadian government have 15 crusise ships stationed strategically around the world just in case something happens and we need to get people out? These kind hostilities happen almost daily in the mid east. It probaly took a day or two just to realize that this was a little more serious than normal. Then you have to round up ships to come to the area and let me tell you these ships don't have warp drives to get them there in a few minutes. Where talking days. So walla. There is your 6 days it took to get the first people out.

Lets blame the over sees missions and consulates shall we:

While every other Canadian is trying to escape the region, these people are staying behind to try and coordinate the evacuation effort and risk thier own lives.

It's people like you that we are talking about, complain, complain, complain. I have a right to everything. The government doesn't have to do this, they don't have to save your ass because you decided to leave the safe confines of Canada. So if you get anything!!!!!!!!!11 Be happy
