If the intent is to sign him to a new contract for next season and beyond, option 1 is a risky decision because he may decide he doesn't want to return. We have seen players re-sign with teams that traded them away before, and he has often expressed a desire to remain in Calgary, so it may not be as risky, but it's still unlikely that he'll be traded if the plan is to re-sign him.

On the other hand, keeping him for the playoff drive doesn't necessarily indicate a desire to keep him beyond this season. It just might be what Treliving considers to be the best option for now.
The latter is definitely an option. Just hoping that the Treliving camp doesn't consider it an option worth exploring.

I really don't think we will suffer too greatly without him though. He was injured for a stretch, and I didn't notice one bit. He also hasn't contributed since the end of December and we've done well.

He could move his way up the list, for sure, but as it stands now he's fighting for 2nd-3rd line duties on his off wing. Not something I'm going to miss too much if there's another team who wants him.
