You make it sound like something that's never happened before.
Trading him for something is, at least to me, better than normal "management of assets" but if Glencross signs elsewhere without being traded it's fairly normal. As in, it was what you expect with a contract. We'll pay you X dollars per year for Y years. There was no stipulation on getting something back near the end of the contract, nor was there an implied assumption, either.
