Everyone was so certain the Flames would finish really low they could have got a kings ransom. Now the Flames have exceeded my expectations but they were 30 points or so up on last place last year.
They lost Cammy...but added Hiller, Raymond, JG ect.
I mean Hiller over Berra, I still don't see how anyone thought they would be at Buffalo's level considering 4th last is their lowest finish in franchise history.

And rightly so - rolling the dice like that is not prudent asset management, nor is it intelligent risk management for a business.
The pick would have been an uncertainty, so they would not have gotten a 'MacDavid' return, they would have gotten a lottery pick return with a year's delay and a modicum of uncertainty to it.
Then, imagine if the season fell apart (crap does happen) or, they win the lottery and give another team the top pick.
You don't build quality franchises by taking horse-trading risks.
