I don't buy it. The Sabres currently have nearly $10 million in cap space and have players like Stewart (4.2 mill), Mitchell (2.5 mill), and Meszaros (4.125 mill) coming off the books this year, giving them another $11 million in cap space. How much do they need? The kid doesn't even make $2 million yet and he probably wanted to be paid at least as a 1A starter, so around $4 million. No problems with that and they had plenty of room to do it. They really should have rewarded him too, since he was one of the few guys who really brought his best every night this season. Although, you could argue that trading him to a halfway decent team IS rewarding him for his service.
