He is amazing at developing a world and taking an interesting premise and seeing where it leads but it always seems like the ending is a disappointment as he tries to create an explanation for what happened - and usually it's "aliens did it" or something similar. The advantage of short stories and novellas is that he often just skips that part and leaves the explanation up to the reader.
My favorite shorter form King works are The Long Walk and The Running Man (which shares only its name with the movie).

I think in that same book they had "Apt Pupil" which was outstanding, and "Getting it on" which was a great piece of writing.
The "Body" which became a movie was a much better short story.
