They learned about a possible safe place and went to check it out. Pretty much what I would expect people to do in such circumstances. It didn't turn out that well, a character I was fond of was killed as well.

Now they made a fairly large decision to go to Washington. If I a remember correctly that is quite a change for Rick. It seems to me he has lost much of his authority over the group.

I was entertained, and really that's about all I expect from a TV show. But what do I know, I liked Beth.

I think we had a few characters redefine themselves. This episode was all about how the character's own brutal actions were molding them and how they were reacting to that.

Michonne is showing a more human side. She previously seemed quite at home wandering around the zombie landscape with her sword. She now desperately seems to want to get back to something civilized.

As you mentioned, Rick also seems to be redefining himself. It seems like he is relinquishing authority more than losing it. Previously his style was to make up his mind and then force his will. He seems to be realizing that he's going to be better off taking advice from others.

Like I said before, the episode makes a lot sense an interlude between destinations.
