I wonder if Calgary could get away with the same? Depends on how the team is doing I guess, but on some nights, people can't give away 300 level seats. I know that a new rink alone will attract people. But I remember reading an article about how new stadiums only increase attendance for about two years before the luster wears off and then it all goes back to team performance.
Ticket prices will obviously go up, and probably more than we would like or think is reasonable. However, I don't think they will go up as much as Edmotnon. As Locke and others have said, Oilfans have shown they'll swallow as much kool-aid as they can and keep coming back for more. Flames fans have reacted more rationally to success and failure.

Also, I think Edmonton prices will eventually level off. They still have a two year cushion to milk the fans, I don't think they'll lose too much ticketwise until at least one year in the new building. Especially with what Oilfans have shown us. Though not as many as before, there are still a lot of people who want to keep their tickets for the opening of the new arena (the promise of McDavid, etc.). There is this highly irrational belief that if they just get through to event 'x' things will be ok and their loyalty will be rewarded. I bet some people even think that owning season tickets in the new arena is a smart investment.

Only when they still suck in the new arena will we see some rational behavior from the fans.
