Sorry but that was lame writing and further evidence to me that they just figured they would dispatch a character while the writers are trying to figure out where to go from here.
When it comes to the zombies I've just stopped asking questions like this. None of it makes any sense. If they're falling apart and rotting, how do they have enough strength to bite through skin? Through clothes? To even move? If the group can smash their heads like soft melons, how can the zombies overpower and bite? Where is this strength and toughness coming from all of a sudden? And how come they never bleed out? Even the torsos we just saw. What do they run on, magic? Fairy dust? If they're still capable of locomotion, they need to have some working systems in the body.

So how big the zombie is, really shouldn't make any difference. There are bigger hurdles to get over here.

EDIT: To add, yeah the writing felt lazy (again). As I mentioned, I don't mind dream sequences, trippy stuff, good imagery, philosophical questions. But they just kept repeating the same things over and over and over again. The runtime of the episode could have been half of what it really was. Such obvious filler.

Kinda hoping some of my guesses are correct. That'll save the episode a bit.
