I stayed in Brooklyn in August - I was at the Holiday Inn Express near Union St. & 4th Ave. Half a block from the Union St. Subway station so it was really great. Lots of food options close by, and 5th Avenue just up the hill is a busy street with pubs, restaurants, etc., Park Slope is a short walk away. Barclays Centre terminal is one stop away (10 minute walk).

There would be a ton of places in that area on Airbnb I bet. Gowanus is a bit of a more run down neighborhood but Park Slope is really, really nice.
