Just try it. Make a habit of washing your hands when you come home, and every time you are about to cook or eat something, and most likely you will notice a difference in how often you get sick. And once you notice that, it's a habit that you won't stop.
(Especially if you have kids you really notice the difference.)

I don't know how someone doesn't wash their hands often. I work in a salon, I deal with a bunch of different clients. I wash before and after each client, I wash before/after eating, after using the restroom. At work alone I probably wash my hands 2-3 times an hour or more, depending on the day. (Plus I'm shampooing hair regularly, so that's even more washing away of germs)
My skin is ridiculously dry all winter, but I'll be damned if my hands aren't going to be as clean as possible.
