You forgot book adaptations. It's also one of the biggest "genres". (Harry Potters, Twilights, Fifty Shades of Grey, Hunger Games...) And blockbusters have always been like that.
(Most of the films considered greatest all time are book adaptations too. And they still make serious book adaptations too, like Silver Linings Playbook.)
Original scripts are rarer now because the "midprice" films are essentially gone now. Studios stopped making them. That's why Lynch wants to do another Twin Peaks, because auteurs like him can't get financing anymore.
Then again most of the same material is now on TV, which many consider to be a superior format for serious storytelling anyway.
