The Gretzky-era Oilers used to tear the Flames to bleeding shreds, stomp on the shreds with their skate blades, scrape the red mulch off the ice, and throw it into a pool specially stocked with sharks with frickin’ lasers on their heads. It was ugly.

Seriously, it seemed that the Flames always appeared to be in those games at some point, giving as good as they got, and then WHAM! The Oilers would score three unanswered goals and run away with the two points.

All that changed in their final meeting of the 1985-86 regular season, which I have reminisced about in boring-old-fart fashion elsewhere. The Flames won that game 9–3, and went on to beat the Oil in that year’s playoffs. They never got embarrassed again, except for one bad stretch in the 1988 playoffs. From then on they played the Oilers pretty even until the never-ending rebuild started up north. Since that, of course, it’s been all Flames. Tough to have a good battle when only one team shows up.
