I agree that the religion of Islam is a big factor in making that area the powder keg that it is, but if you were substitute Islam with any other major religion and kept the history the same, i don't think things would be that different.

It begs the question:
If these areas are so cultured and ancient, if they have so much mineral wealth, and if they have a strong historic tradition of education, philosophy and science, why are they largely backwater hell hole 2nd and 3rd world theocracies?
